Angelina mother, Marcheline Bertrand passed away in January this year after losing her battle with ovarian cancer. Angelina criticized media reports about her recent weight loss. Her recent weight loss was due to grief and not due to her intentions to look skinny.

Angelina told Grazia magazine:

I have always been lean and this year I lost my mother and I've gone through a lot.

The thing that's disturbing is that instead of people saying, 'This looks like a person that's actually dealing with something, probably from emotions', they say, 'Does she fit into skinny jeans and look thin?

I want people to understand who I am as a person is not somebody that's trying to look thin, but just trying to work through a very difficult year.

Angelina has lot of praise for her partner Brad Pitt for his support during grief period and spent time with her after her mother’s death. According to Jolia Was just 'extraordinary'.

He sat with me and held her hand. After she passed away he spend the night asking my brother and me about our mother and got us to tell funny stories about her. He focused on all the love and joy we were fortunate enough to have had.

According to the researchers here in US, watching too much of TV may not only make children them fatty, it may increase their blood pressure as well. In the past we go through many studies, which indicates strong relationship between watching TV and obesity. Obesity checks to be implemented from Year one among children

According to a leading expert, obesity checks like weights and measurements among children should be done from the first year of their birthday as a way to deal with the growing obesity epidemic.

The National obesity forum chairman, Colin Waine, said: "Weighing children at five would be useful but it would be more logical to start measuring children on a yearly basis from one year old. The early signs of obesity can be detected before school."

According to Dr Waine, these obesity checks could also be targeted at the whole family in case obesity was a wider issue. Right now children are being weighed at 5 and 10 in England and Wales. Parents are being informed about the results only after their requests.

With the new Government plans, parents could be handed the results automatically. Children obesity has been getting bigger and bigger over the fast decades with 16.9 percent of boys being obese and 16.8 percent of girls are classified as obese in UK. If people in UK go ahead with the current level of obesity growth, about 60 percent of men, 50 percent of women and 25 percent of children will be obese by 2050 there.

Keely and Kyle lose more than 100 pounds with weight watchers

Brother and sister Kyle and Keely NeSmith of Statesboro, were named second place winners of Weight Watchers “2007 Inspiring Stories of the Year.” They were given American Express gift certificates and Weight Watchers products. Both Keely and Kyle were able to lose 105 pounds in six to eight months period with Weight Watchers.

Kyle and Keely works together for their NeSmith Constructions. It was Keely who made her bother Kyle to come with her. As "She wanted someone to go with her and, since we work together and eat lunch together every day, I guess she thought I was the best candidate for the job,"

After losing the weight with Weight Watchers, Kyle was feeling much better and was able to do things couldn’t do before. Lisa Craig public relations director for the Southeast Region of Weight Watchers, said, "One of the things we loved about their story was that they worked together and that they helped each other succeed,” said Craig. “We were delighted to have them attend weight watchers together. They are great representatives of our program."

Both Kyle and Keely said the biggest benefit they achieved after joining Weight Watchers was the education they get about eating properly.

"We learned that even fast food could be healthy. We’re always on the go - but you can find healthy alternatives at fast food restaurants,” said Keely. “I always thought, ‘ugh, who wants a salad or a grilled chicken sandwich,’ but they’re pretty good. Once you get your mindset that it’s good and you don’t need a lot of food to fill you up, it worked. We found things that we’re very healthy and that were good, but we didn’t know existed before we joined Weight Watcher’s."

Women using illegal ways to lose weight

What you would do to lose weight? Would you prefer taking laxatives, fasting, diet pills, exercising, healthy food or some other ways to lose weight? What about adopting illegal steps to lose weight?

According to a survey done in UK, one out of seven women is using illegal drugs like cocaine or speed to lose weight. Many more women are taking slimming pills to lose extra weight.

Yet we know that both drug taking and severe dieting are mostly ineffective. In most of the cases, you are going to regain the weight lost if any in a week or so.

We know how much harmful the drugs like cocaine and speed are. Many people have to lose their lives every year by the use of drugs like cocaine and amphetamines.

Survey found that 37 percent women used slimming pills, 15 percent had used dangerous drugs speed and cocaine and 26 percent had used laxatives as slimming aids. Three out of four women said that they spend their lives snacking while two third starved themselves before a big night out.

Dr Ian Campbell, medical director of Weight Concern, said it was alarming that women were using illicit drugs in ill-fated slimming attempts. "There is no evidence that they have any long-term effect on weight but a great deal of evidence that they are harmful to health," he added. "The only long-term solution to weight control is lifestyle changes, including dietary modification and more exercise. There is no substitute for effort."

One out of four children overweight when start school

According to the latest figures available, one out of every 4 children is already overweight when he/she goes to the school for the first time. And these figures become more dangers in some areas where one out of every three children is overweight by the time they finished their primary schools at the age of 11 (The Daily Mail UK).

A snapshot shows that young people are getting more and more obese despite Government pledge to act. These figures are part of the survey of children's weight by the Department of Health.

The figure shows that Isle is facing the biggest weight problem. In Isle, approx 30 percent of children are already overweight or obese when they start their schools and the figures rises to 34 percent by the time they leave their primary schools.

Right now, the information about child obesity is available only via request to parents. But now Government is thinking of making it a routine to inform parents about child obesity quite often.

Modern lifestyle reason for obesity

According to the British Government think tanks, it is not only over eating and lack of exercises that leads to the current obesity problem, but it is modern life that leads to this situation. They found that technological revolution of the 20th century has led to weight gain becoming unavoidable for the majority of the population (From Yahoo News).

"Stocking up on food was key to survival in prehistoric times, but now with energy dense, cheap foods, labor-saving devices, motorized transport and sedentary work, obesity is rapidly becoming a consequence of modern life," said Sir David King, the British government's chief scientific adviser and head of the Foresight program.

They predicted that it would take at least thirty years to reverse this epidemic like growing obesity problem. Government has so far designed policies to encourage people especially children to adopt healthier lifestyles, eating less fast food items and doing more exercise.

But according to Sir David, everyone has to make change in his or her attitudes to solve the obesity problem. Researchers said that there is no magic bullet to solve this problem and also there is no appetite-suppressing drug that can solve this problem, as the obesity problem is systemic.

To solve obesity problem, we have to make big changes in society with increase in our daily routine activities. According to the researchers, if we continue with the same obesity growth, approx 60 % of men, 50 % of women and 25 % of children in the country will be obese by 2050.

Commenting on the report, British public health minister Dawn Primarolo said: "We have made progress with improved physical activity levels at school, healthier school food for children, clearer food labeling and tougher restrictions on advertising foods high in fat and sugar to children -- but we know that we need to go further and faster."

Fast food banned in LA

fast food banned in Los Angles
Los Angles Council is thinking of banning the new fast food restaurants there. The main reason for banning the fast foods restaurants will be to stop the obesity problem among people there, which is approx 30 percent right now. Because the people behavior in the city is just to eat whatever is available without thinking about its health prospective.

Although somehow there’s a truth about this matter, but can’t we protect ourselves to select better food? Are we too much lazy or dumb that we need Government involvement to standardize what we eat?

The movement of Government has already started. For example, by not issuing liquor licenses, no smoking in restaurants, even foie grass is banned in Chicago only for ethical reason.

So when the Government is issuing the instruction, the dumb people in the city will be saved from obesity. Maybe swapping Colonel or the Red hair clown to Thomas Keller, may appeal our sense of culture.

But are we going to be slimmer because of it?

‘Supersized’ patients banned from hospital waiting rooms

‘Supersized’ patients banned Staffs at Ealing hospital in West London have been warned not to send its obese patients to its first floor amid fears that building will not be able to take their weights. Patients who weigh 3o stones or more have been kept to the ground floor wards because the management are worried they are too heavy for the admissions ward upstairs (via - thisislondon.co.uk.

This disclosure is part of an investigation which shows that hospital has doubled it’s spending to treat the overweight patients and to cope with the rising obesity problem in Britain. On an average the hospital spent £60,000 on "supersized" equipment including beds, trolleys and mortuary fridges to treat obese patients compared with £30,000 just three years ago.

According to the stats from Liberal Democrats, which are available after the investigation of 150 hospitals trusts which, shows that spending on larger patients has risen from £5.8 million to £13 million in just three years.

With this the number of obese patients being admitted to hospitals have also increased significantly. Since 2002, numbers of obese adults being hospitalized have increased by 45 percent and obese children by 30 percent.

What is best for weight loss: dieting or exercising?

It is not as easy to tell which is best dieting or exercising. But it is the net calorie deficit – burning more calories than you consume that counts the most.

Researchers divided three-dozen overweight but healthy men and women into three groups. First group decrease their calorie intake by 25 percent while the second group increase their calories consumption by 12.5 percent while burning 12.5 percent more calories by exercising. And the third group makes no change to its dieting or exercising pattern.

The researchers noticed the weight loss, body composition and measures of superficial and deep fat. But they found that it does not matter whether you lose weight by exercising or by dieting or combination of both dieting and exercising. But exercising has its own health benefits (From The Boston Globe).

Which is better running or walking?

Many of us think that walking is better than running when it comes about getting fit and obtaining a good health. But if believe the researchers, jogging is the easiest and fastest way to fitness and good health (From Hindustan Times).

Yes, that's true. According to a latest study in Britain, Walking, gardening or moving around the park or nearby market is not enough to keep you fit and fine. You can achieve maximum benefit from other hard physical activities like jogging, running or playing tennis.

People have been misled into a thinking that they have to do little bit of hovering or gardening for their fitness but that's not the case at all. It is true that fast walking has its health benefits but other strong physical activities like running, jogging and playing tennis etc has the potential to save you from many diseases.

The researchers from the University of Exeter came to this conclusion after carrying out a study on 1200 adults in Britain. Study finds that exercises can reduce the risk of many forms of cancer like prostate and color cancer.

With this running strengthens heart, slashes risk of cardio-vascular disease, reduces risk of blood clot, and lowers cholesterol levels. "The bottom line is that people should be physically active wherever possible. They should try to walk to work and take the stairs rather than the lift. To minimize their risk of disease, they should also include some vigorous activity three or more times a week".
